In the first days of the infection, Luke and Grace's mother was killed in the outbreak. They tagged along with their father for a few weeks until one night when he decided to commit suicide by way of a bullet to the skull. In childhood, Luke would never leave his sister's side, always feeling overly protective of her. When they moved out after high school, they didn't go far from home, only a city away. Luke preferred the life of a city dweller more than the rural countryman. The rifle that he carries is the one that belonged to his father, and also the one his father used to commit suicide. Among his weaknesses are his right shoulder, which hasn't quite been the same since he was shot in the early days of the infection, and his inability to trust, which has gotten him into trouble more than once.
